letters-ref-ayin Ayin ע is the sixteenth Hebrew letter. Ayin has the shape of the English or Latin "y". In order to understand the ע Ayin, you have to remember the ס Samech, the fifteenth Hebrew letter, which has the shape of a circle.

ס Samech represents the power of the Ain Soph, the beginning and the ending of all things, that limitless nothingness at the base of everything. ס Samech, the fifteenth letter, represents the activity of existence. The ס Samech, or the circle, the serpent biting it's tail, illustrates for us all of the evolutive and devolutive forces of existence. The ס Samech represents the capacity to arise or to fall.

The ס Samech (15) depicts how the נ Nun (14) works. The נ Nun is the fourteenth Hebrew letter, which has a shape somewhat similar to a square halved (or split). If you took a נ Nun, which represents the fish that swims in the waters of life, and you make that נ Nun active, it spins, it goes into motion, it creates a circle, which is ס Samech. So when Nun, the fourteenth Hebrew letter, is put into activity, it activates all the forces of the Ain Soph, the primordial energies of existence, represented by the fifteenth letter, ס Samech. Yet, the direction of that spin is determined by the results of your actions. The direction of the spin of energy is not mechanical. It is not based on a mechanical law, it is based in will, consciousness, and action. The direction in which our forces flow, is not merely action physically driven by will, but action mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Stated in simple terms, the נ Nun, which represents a fish, is the energy in your waters (מ Mem) that gives you life, which is in every cell and atom of your existence: body, heart, and mind. Your actions from moment to moment put that energy in activity. In each moment, you spin it. You direct it, consciously or unconsciously. Your behaviors, physically and psychologically, put that energy into motion. This is why Gnosis and any true spiritual teaching is deeply psychological, because according to how your psyche functions, the light becomes activated. You see, this is important because Ayin is related to the Light.

The letter ע Ayin (16) is the outcome of the action of the נ Nun (14) through ס Samech (15). The ע Ayin is a split force, it is a "Y," and it is split because it is dual: there is light and there is darkness. This is why the great Master Jesus told his disciples that the illuminator of the soma, the self, is the eye. No one understands this cryptic phrase, which is recorded in the gospels. When you read it literally, it doesn't make sense. If you don't know Kabbalah, you will not understand it.

The Eye is the Light of the Self

In English, most people read this statement as,

The eye is the lamp of the body and if thine eye be single, thou body shall be full of light.

That doesn't make any sense. How can your eye become single? Does that mean that one should put out one eye and only have one eye? How does your body become full of light? That also doesn't make sense. This phrase is nonsensical because the translation is wrong. When you look into the original Greek words, you can find the real meaning.

Ὁ λύχνος τοῦ σώματός ἐστιν ὁ ὀφθαλμός ἐὰν οὖν ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου ἁπλοῦς ᾖ, ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου φωτεινὸν ἔσται ἐὰν δὲ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρὸς ᾖ, ὅλον τὸ σῶμά σου σκοτεινὸν ἔσται εἰ οὖν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἐν σοὶ σκότος ἐστὶν, τὸ σκότος πόσον

The eye is the illumination of the soma (literally, body, but a reference to soma psuchikon, the body of the soul or self). If thine eye (ophthalmos) be singular (aplous: clear, simple, uncomplicated, pure), thy whole self (sōma) will be full of light (phōteinon). Yet if thine eye be impure (ponēros), thy whole self (sōma) shall be full of darkness (skoteinon). Therefore, if the light (phōs) that is in thee be darkness (skotos), how great is that darkness!  - Jesus, Matthew 6:22-23

In Greek, this quote from Jesus is exceptionally important and very beautiful. Retranslated from the Greek it says:

The eye is the illumination of the self...

ancient-ayinHere, the eye referred to is represented by the Hebrew letter ע Ayin. In fact, in ancient Hebrew, the letter Ayin was written as the shape of an eye (see illustration at right).

In Hebrew, the word  עין Ayin means “eye, to see.” Ayin also represents the light itself; not physical light, but the supernal light from which everything is created.

The character ע Ayin represents how we see, and you can see it in its split-shape. At the top, it has two י Iods, which represent your two eyes. Yet, in the context of Gnosis and real Christianity, the eyes represented here are not physical. Jesus is not talking about your physical eye, he is talking about your spiritual eye - your Ayin. So he says

The eye is the illumination of the self. If thine eye (ophthalmos) be singular (aplous: clear, simple, uncomplicated, pure), thy whole self (sōma) will be full of light (phōteinon).

In order to understand this we need to understand the Greek meaning of aplous, which is usually translated as “singular”; aplous does not mean “one.” To translate it as “single” in English is incorrect. This word in Greek is "aplous," which means “uncomplicated,” simple. It does not mean simple as in stupid, it means simple as in pure. For example, in metals or compounds in nature, there are many complex compounds, but the most powerful are the simplest, such as hydrogen, which is the simplest, the most potent. There is incredible power in hydrogen because of it's purity. What he is addressing here is the purity of the consciousness: how we see.

The Greek word Soma is usually translated as "body" but actually means "self." (Here you can see that persistant confusion of self with body. Your true self is not the body, but the translators of the Bible did not even know that simple fact). Jesus is not talking about the physical body, he is talking about Soma-Psuchikon, which in Greek means “the Soul image.” The soul is the reflection of God. So what he is stating is if your Soul, your mind, is simple and pure, then your soul, your mind, will be full of light. Now the statement makes sense, right? He saying in another way what he said here:

And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. - Matthew 3

Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. - Mark 10:15

The common translation that says “if your eye is single your body is full of light” does not make sense. But it does make sense to say that when your soul, your consciousness is simple, innocent and pure like a child, then your soul will be full of light. The quote continues,

Yet if thine eye be impure (ponēros), thy whole self (sōma) shall be full of darkness (skoteinon). Therefore, if the light (phōs) that is in thee be darkness (skotos), how great is that darkness! - Matthew 6

The Greek word for light is "phos." In the lecture on Samech, you learned about "phos." You heard about phos-phorus, Christophorus, the bearer of light. This word Phos in Greek is the equivalent of the Hebrew word, Aur, light.

In the Gospel of Luke it continues:

Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. If thy whole body therefore [be] full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light. - Luke 11:35-36

Most people skim right past this and read it like they read most things: in a very superficial way, thus, their understanding of it is also very shallow. This quote is not superficial. What he is saying here is that the light in you can be darkness: “ Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.”

The Light in us can be dark light. So, there are two kinds of light. It is very clear in his statement. In fact, the book of Genesis states the same thing. The book of Genesis states

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be אור aur, light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that [it was] טוב tob (good): and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called ליל [layil, night]. And the evening and the morning were the first day. - Genesis 1

This is an Alchemical phrase. It is psychological. It is not physical; it does not concern physical matter. It concerns the creation of your soul. It concerns how you, as a soul, emerged from the Great Unknowable, entered into existence, and became that which in your depth you are, which is Ain Soph. The root of the root in you is represented by the letter Samech. It is your Inner Divine Star, in the depth of your depths. Unfortunately, it is very rare for any of us to have seen with our Ayin that light because that light is uncreated light. It is a form of spiritual light, it has nothing to do with physical light. To see that light, one's spiritual eyes have to be open. From the uncreated light (Ain Soph) comes day (the light polarized above) and night (the light polarized below: darkness).

And the serpent [ס Samech] said unto the woman [ז Zayin], Ye shall not surely die: For Elohim doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your עין [ayin, eyes] shall be opened, and ye shall be as Elohim, knowing טוב [Tob, good] and רע [Ra, pollution].

And when the woman saw that the עץ [ets, tree] was good for food, and that it [was] pleasant to the עין [ayin, eyes], and a tree to be desired to make [one] wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the עין [ayin, eyes] of them both were opened, and they knew that they [were] naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. - Genesis 4

eve-lucifer-adamAdam and Eve, by misunderstanding, by making a mistake, had their eyes opened, but by making a mistake, by giving in to temptation. Adam and Eve are symbols of our psychological nature. Because of the fall into temptation “their eyes were opened” and they did not see what should have been seen.  Because of the fall into sin, into mistakes, the doors opened to suffering: the darkness.

There are different forms of light and darkness that we should keep in mind.

1. The Ain Soph, which is at the top of the Tree of Life, symbolically is described as “uncreated light,” which can be said to be “dark” because we do not have the eyes to see it. Our own Ayin has not developed for us to see that supernal light, so to us, it is darkness. Nonetheless, it is a light that manifests all existence, gradually, through stages and condensation, through complication of matter and energy as:

2. The flow of the Ain Soph Aur (the Ray of Creation, Christ, the light of the world) illuminates all the galaxies, solar systems, suns, planets, and atoms of existence. This light has many levels. The vast majority are non-physical. When that light finally emerges into the physical realm, its vehicle is the solar light. It is the life in every atom.

3. The spiritual light (Aur) of the Ain Soph (the Ray of Creation) continues to descend in order to create the inferior darkness, or the inferior chaos, which we call Hell, or the Abyss. It is that same light, yet polarized, modified, flowing down through the depths of nature and the mind. This is the “light” of the unconsciousness, subconsciousness, and infraconsciousness: the depths of the mind. When we dream, when we fantasize, when we imagine our desires, we are utilizing that dark light. What we see in our nightmares is that same light of the Ain Soph but inverted, negative. It is still light, but dark. This is what Jesus is describing,

If that light in you be darkness, how great is that darkness.

In its root, the light is "phos" in Greek and "aur" in Hebrew. It is Lucifer, which in Latin literally means “bearer of light.” Lucifer is the light in us. Yes, our inner, spiritual light is Lucifer, but his condition is determined by our psychological and spiritual state. Lucifer can either be in Heaven as the greatest Angel of the Hierarchy, or Lucifer can be in Hell, descended and polarized negatively. The conditioning of that light is determined by us, through our actions. Nonetheless, that light is the source of Life. Without it, there would be no life.

As you see, that Light descends. Everything that exists, exists because of that light, that fire that illuminates every atom in your body. That fire is the electricity in your brain, the energy that moves through your nerves. It is the very force or substance of the Soul. We need that. Without that light, there is nothing.

The light is Christ, which comes from the Greek Krestos (Χριστός Khristós), which means “the Anointed One,” and Krestos, whose esoteric meaning is “fire.” It is the fire that gives light.

I am come to send fire on the earth... - Luke 12:49

The people which sat in darkness (σκότος skotos) saw great light (φῶς phōs); and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light (φῶς phōs) is sprung up. From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

Here, it is good to know that Jesus, Ἰησοῦς, Iēsous, comes from the Hebrew יהשוה, Yeshua, derived from the Holy Name of God יהוה filled with fire ש. There are many names around the world for that light: Quetzacoatl, Okidanokh, Vishnu, Apollo, Krishna... these are names for the same force. The light, Christ, creates through compassion and love. We receive that light, and it gives us life. In the book of John it states

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was Go d. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light (φῶς phōs) of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

What is that darkness? It is two-fold.  The darkness mentioned here is the uncreated light of the Ain Soph, which does not comprehend itself. In order to gain comprehension of itself, it has to unfold into existence. When that Light emerges into existence and particularizes itself, it condenses itself: we take up forms, bodies, we come to be. The body we inhabit is made possible by light. It is all the light, energy, force, and fire that exists in us, but that light has become darkness and the darkness does not comprehend the light. In other words, we do not understand ourselves. We do not understand where we come from. We do not understand why we are alive and what life is and how to use it. Because of that ignorance (Sanskrit: avidya, “without knowledge”) and because of desire, we create suffering and we make a mess of everything.

Nonetheless, there is a way to gain knowledge of that light at the root of our Being, and we know this is true because the word knowledge in Hebrew is דעת Daath. It has three characters: Daleth, Ayin, and Tav. The very middle of that word is ע Ayin, which is the light, our spiritual eyes. In other words, to have knowledge one must see. Real knowledge (Gnosis, Daath) is not theoretical, it is experienced. When you really know something, it is because you have experienced it, not merely because you believe it or because it is a nice idea. This is the meeting of Daath: knowledge through experience. This is Gnosis: real knowledge.

The acquisition and the potential to acquire knowledge of our true nature is why we are alive. It is not to build great civilizations or to just have money or kids. In the end, we die. What is the point of having lots of money or kids? We cannot take anything with us at the moment of death except what is in our soul. What is in our soul, what is in our Soma-Psuchikon, is eternal; it is phos, light. That light is acquired through experience, through knowing.

The Light in the Two Trees

two-treesThis is why in the very beginning, when our souls were being prepared to enter into the work that we must do, it is written symbolically in the book of Genesis that the Elohim placed two symbolic trees that would provide us with sustenance and nourishment.

And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every עץ [ets, tree] that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.- Genesis 2

In Hebrew the word for tree is עץ "ets" spelled Ayin Tzadi. These letters look very similar. Both are dual. Both look like an English or Latin "y."

The Tree of Life (or עץ החיים the Tree of Lives, because it is plural) is the tree of the Kabbalah. That tree is your spinal column, your nervous system, and your brain.

The second tree is the Tree of Knowledge of purity and impurity: עץ הדעת טוב ורע. That tree is sexual, psychological, Alchemical. It is hidden inside the Tree of Life. It is hidden inside your spinal column, your brain, your endocrine system. It is from these places that we are nourished and our life emerges, yet if we abuse the tree, we create suffering.

This is abundantly evident in our world. Those who abuse the Tree of Life in themselves and abuse the Tree of Knowledge in themselves create suffering. People abuse the intellect, the heart, and most of all, abuse sex.

The Hebrew word עץ Etz or Otz, tree, begins with ע Ayin: light. These two trees exist because of the light that is within them. When we understand that these two trees represent our psychology and energy, then we have to see how the light in our trees is polarized. Is our inner tree filled with light or darkness?

[Jesus said] “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” - Matthew 7

The light (ע Ayin) in these trees (עץ Otz) is the power that God, the Divine, that the Ain Soph, places in us: the power to create. Our creative power is the root of every thing. Because everything is cause and effect. Nothing is simply destiny or pre-determined, it is determined by action. The entire Universe is determined by action. This is why in Genesis it says

And out of the ground made Jehovah-Elohim should grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight (Ayin) and good for food (for the soul). The tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

The two trees are deeply related with each other. You cannot get anywhere spiritually if you study one without the other. That is, in order to understand our situation and how to change it, we need to understand both aspects very deeply. In synthesis, the two parts are Kabbalah (the Tree of Life) and Tantra, Alchemy (the Tree of Knowledge). In a way, you can say that they are the same tree, but we study it in two parts.

You yourself are a tree, a reflection of the universal tree. We are reflections of the universe. Within us is everything that we need in order to know the entire universe. This is why the Oracle of Delphi stated,

Know thyself and thou shalt know the universe and its Gods...

As a mind and as a soul we reflect the universe, in the same way that the waves of the ocean and the patterns in the sea reflect the patterns in the sky.

Through these symbolic trees, Adam and Eve received the sustenance and nourishment in order to grow. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve spoke with God, talked with God, knew God, walked with the divine. There was no mystery there for them; there was happiness and innocence. That state is symbolic of the state previous to sin, to רע Ra, impurity. It is a state previous to having knowledge of suffering. It is a state that we have forgotten. Nonetheless, we pass through a reflection of it, because in all of the beautiful processes of nature, previous states are recapitulated.

Our Spiritual Evolution

When organisms develop and pass through all the embryonic states of early development, these states are recapitulations of their early stages of development from past times. Therefore when we are children in the womb, this is a state that the reflects the early, early ages of our evolution. Embryonic development is like a mirror to the past. By studying the development of a fetus in the womb and its emergence through birth, we can understand our development as a soul, as a psyche, in past ages.

The child in the womb is in darkness, in ignorance, without sight, without vision. This state is mirrored in the story of Adam and Eve: at first, Adam and Eve (representing humanity) were safely in the womb of creation, innocent and free of care. This relates to an evolutionary stage of humanity long ago, in the age of Lemuria, when we were innocent and very immature spiritually. We had not yet “been born” spiritually - that is, we did not have knowledge (Daath). Unfortunately, our spiritual birth was corrupted, because we were introduced to a mistaken concept: to eat of the fruit and to break the law. In that age, Havah or Eve ate of that fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and acquired knowledge, but you see, the Tree of Knowledge, Daath, is a duality: the Tree of Knowledge of Tob ve Ra. In Hebrew, Tob means goodness. Ve is “and.” Ra means pollution, impurity. When we as an ancient humanity ate of that forbidden fruit, we discovered impurity, sin, how to break the Law for personal pleasure. We did not care about the consequence, and we still do not care. We still ignore the consequences of our actions.

Nonetheless, in the Bible it states,

The serpent saith unto to the woman You shalt not surely die for the Elohim know for in the day you eat, your eyes shall be opened and you will as the Elohim knowing Good and Evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired, to make one wise, she took of the fruit and ate and gave unto her husband and ate and the eyes of them both were opened and they knew that they were naked. And they sowed fig leaves together and made aprons.

In that moment, suffering was born. Suffering was unveiled: רע Ra, impurity.

"And the eyes of them both were opened..." (Beresheet 3:7). Rabbi Chiya said that they were now opened to know the evils of the world, which they were not aware of up to then. As a result of opening their eyes to evil, they learned that they were naked. Once they knew, and their eyes opened, they realized their nakedness, since they lost the sublime luster that enveloped them; it was gone from them and they were left naked of it. - Zohar

This very deep symbol (which seems to be addressed in nearly every lecture) contains a very potent mystical truth whose reality you must experience to understand. The intellect may accept it or reject it, sometimes in the same day. The heart will believe or disbelieve it from one moment to the next. We have to know it through our experience. We can acquire that knowledge through the same tree. The way to correct the mistake, this mistake that we repeat daily, psychologically, is to begin to respect that tree in ourselves. We have to understand the laws and be in harmony with them but we can't do that if we ignore what the fruit is and what it means to have one's eyes open.

When Havah and Adam ate the fruit, their eyes were opened because of Daath, but opened through Ra - impurity. In the cases of Jacob, Moshe (Moses),Yeshua (Jesus), they respected the tree: they did not eat that fruit. They worked with Daath, the tree of knowledge, because they all had incredible knowledge, but in Tob, goodness, purity: psychological purity, mental purity, sexual purity, and spiritual purity. This is the requisite. When we accomplish that, when we are in our daily life following the instructions of Jesus, "Take heed that the light which is in thee be not darkness," this means that we are watching our mind continually, to see that light within. We turn our eyes inward and look at our mind, watching for that modified light, which is not of God, which is not of the Soul, not of the Elohim... that is darkness, Ra. By doing that and succeeding in that, we can free the pure light, symbolized by Eurydice in the Greek mysteries. Eurydice, the spouse, the true love of Orpheus, became trapped in hell, trapped in the kingdom of Pluto, which is our body, our mind. When we retrieve that light (which is related to Geburah, the divine Soul and the letter Zayin), we begin to have true vision, seeing the light through Tob. We begin to receive guidance from God through our own internal trees: the tree of life, the tree of knowledge.

That guidance was given to Adam and Eve. When the soul wants to leave the wilderness, to escape from Mitzarim (Egypt, symbolic of our state of suffering), then our willpower, Moses (Moshe), can lead the parts of our Being out, which are the people of Israel, symbolically. The same way that Orpheus leads Eurydice out of the Abyss, Moses (Moshe) leads Is-Ra-El out of the realm of the pharaoh, but how does this happen? Because the Ain Soph, that Divine Light, is provided for guidance. In the bible it is written

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night...

Once again, most people read this story literally and think that literally the Jews were marching through the desert to escape the physical Egypt, and there was a big cloud that went ahead of them and there was a big fire in the sky that went ahead of them. Please discard all those comic book stories from your mind, and understand that such events never happened literally, they are symbolic. These stories are myths that hide spiritual knowledge. What really happened was psychological and spiritual. The Exodus or escape from hell happens in every Initiate, every Prophet who follows their own Inner Elohim and is led out of psychological slavery to their ego, anger, pride, lust, and all its forms.

pillar-cloudWhat is interesting is the symbol of a pillar of cloud and a pillar of fire. In Hebrew, pillar is עמוד amuwd, which begins with the letter ע Ayin. In Hebrew, cloud is ענן anan, which also begins with Ayin. The fire is אש esh. These two pillars hide a mystery related to initiation and levels of knowledge.

These pillars relate to the secret wisdom of the letter ע Ayin: how we receive guidance from God by awakening our vision spiritually, not physically. Our physical vision is spiritually irrelevant. What matters is our spiritual vision, which begins with intuition, hunches, a sense of what is right and wrong. We call it “conscience.” Conscience is the very spark of your soul. When that spark conscience is respected, fed, developed,and nourished, it is what becomes Soul. That is what becomes the Angel. Do you realize that the conscience that you always ignore is the very potential to become an angel, a Buddha?

This is why the Bible is so specific that God always punishes the impure. Yet nowadays, all we hear from the official religions is that “God loves everyone, that He accepts everyone equally.” It does not say anywhere in the Bible or any scripture. This is just an invention of spiritual leaders who want to fill their churches and temples. What the scriptures actually say is this:

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. - 1 Corinthians 6

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord [“I believe in you”], shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity [Ra, pollution]. - Matthew 7

Jesus said that if you look at a woman lustfully, you have committed adultery. It is that simple. Iniquity, ra, pollution, is in your mind, in your heart. That is why when we look into ourselves for light, we see darkness, and how great is that darkness.

When the eye is evil (ayin ra), it becomes a slave to the purposes of sin and the yetzer hara (the evil impulse). As Rashi said, “The heart and the eyes are the spies of the body: they lead a person to transgress; the eyes see, the heart covets, and the body transgresses (Bamidbar 15.39). - Zohar

Physical behavior is only a percentage of our true behavior, which is psychological. When you look into your mind, and you are sincere, and you see your frustration, pride, anger, resentment, envy, that is darkness, and none of that can enter Heaven, and none of that can create happiness. None of it.

We need to see the light, but the real light, Phos, the light of Christ: Aur. That light can only emerge when we separate the light from the darkness, when we, as a conscience, can see the difference in ourselves. When we can see the difference, then we can start seeing that pillar of cloud and that pillar of fire inside ourselves, in the mind and through the spirit, through the soul. You see, that fire in Hebrew is אש "Esh," and that light is אור "Aur". Both begin with א Aleph, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which is that great wind that emerges out of the unknown, the Great Breath, the root of roots who can provide that guidance to us. To receive it, we need to see it, thus we need Ayin.

Spiritual Vision

Ayin is inside of us. We all have Ayin within. All of us have spiritual sight. In new age terminology, we can call it "clairvoyance," but this term can be misleading because some believe that only a few special people have clairvoyance, and if you pay them a lot of money they can give it to you. That is a lie. The term clairvoyance was an invention used to hide something that is actually very simple. A more accurate word is imagination. Imagination is the ability of your soul to see. By imagination, I am not talking about fantasy. Fantasy is the inverse pole of imagination. Fantasy is to see darkness.

When you close your eyes, if I start describing something related to desire, you can visualize and picture it immediately. For example, if you really love hot dogs, you can immediately imagine a hot dog without any problem. But if I suggest that you try to imagine God or an Angel, or your Soul or your Divine Mother, you will struggle. You will look and it will be dark. This is because your capacity, your Phos, your light, is trapped in desire, in your mind. To free that is to work with your human soul, Orpheus, Hercules, Perseus, Theseus, Lancelot, all these symbols that represent your consciousness which descend into the darkness of your mind to retrieve the light, to steal fire from the devil. Your human soul (Tiphereth) has to retrieve Eurydice (Helen, Beatrice, Persephone) and along the way to kill Medusa (Python, Minotaur, Kraken, Behemoth, etc) and how does the hero do it? The only way that we can do it is to harness the very power of that Light.

As I explained, the infernal worlds exist because of our own actions. When we cultivate desire in ourselves, for example frustration, when we become frustrated, that is a form of anger. There is a lot of energy there, psychological energy that even you can feel physically. It comes as a tension or aggression, sometimes even as laziness. When we do not comprehend our frustration, it creates a mental formation. It creates an entity that is not physical but psychological.  That form cannot exist in Heaven, in Nirvana. That form exists in the depths of our mind, what is called Klipoth, the world of the shells, also known as Hell. What gives that form existence is that light trapped within it, that Phos, the Aur. To retrieve the light, we have to understand that mistake, how we made that mistake. This is why in this tradition we study meditation.

Through meditation we analyze the contents of our mind in order to understand our mistakes and correct them. This is very, very difficult to do. It says in the Bible

And this is the condemnation, that φῶς phōs (light) is come into the κόσμος kosmos, and men loved σκότος skotos (darkness) rather than φῶς phōs (light), because their deeds were πονηρός ponēros (hurtful). For every one that doeth φαῦλος phaulos (foulness) hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in θεός theos (God). - John 3

When we start talking about this, people become uncomfortable. Everyone starts fidgeting because we do not like to see the contents of our mind. We do not like the light to shine upon our anger, lust, and pride. We like to think of ourselves as saints, as good people, but the truth is otherwise. Every prophet who said so was condemned and hated by the populace. That is why they tortured Jesus, imprisoned Peter, beheaded the martyrs, and burned them alive.  We do not like to hear about our own culpability.

Nonetheless, through introspection, through looking with our Ayin within, we can start looking at the truth of ourselves. This is not a pleasant thing to see, and most people run away. Most people run to another teaching that makes everybody feel good, that gives them an insurance policy for eternity. Most people try to hide from themselves in religions and schools that say if you believe or you give a certain amount of money you will go to heaven. Yet the fact is that only the pure receive the Light, because they become one with it. The light is within us, the light is there, it just needs to be awakened. It needs to fill us just as Jesus said, yet it can only do that if the darkness is removed.

Look within your mind, where do you see light? Watch your mind from day to day, from moment to moment: where do you see real virtue? True selfless love? Even in what we call “love,” it is usually selfish; it is usually “for me,” to make me feel good, like I am a loving person. “I did this for you, see how good I am?” That is not love, that is pride.

Sanctity is psychological purity; it is Light. True sanctity has no ego, no "I", no self, no “me.” Real sanctity is light and fire. This is why the Angels are light and fire. That is why the Buddhas have a halo or ring of light, why Moshe (Moses) has horns of light, why Jesus is covered by flames, Esh. That is purity. That is that pure light of the Ain Soph Aur that irradiates from them.

Adam and Eve (humanity) once had that light. Adam and Eve were pure, innocent; we were once that, and as children, we taste it briefly. This is why we look back at our childhood and we long for that innocence. When see a baby, when we see that purity and innocence in them, we long for it in the depths of our heart because we tasted it once. Sadly, we do not know how to get back to it. The way to get back to it is through Daath, self-knowedge - not just theories, but seeing, because the middle of דעת Daath (knowledge) is the letter ע Ayin.

Seeing yourself with your spiritual eyes, seeing the truth of oneself, is the first step of freeing one self. In other words, we have to become our own maker. A Master is a product of one's own deeds. No one makes a Master of another. No one makes a Buddha but they themselves, and do they do it through their own actions. They arrive at that state through conscious knowledge of themselves.

Samson and Delilah: the Sun and the Night

Unfortunately, sometimes Masters fall. This happened with Samson. In Hebrew, his name is שמשון "Shemshun," of the Sun - the power of the Sun. Samson had a lover named "Delilah." That name in Hebrew means “from the night,”  In Hebrew, דלילה Delilah comes from לילה Laila, “night” and the letter ד daleth, which indicates a door; she is the “doorway to the night” and is related to Lilith. The scripture Judges relates how Samson was the most powerful man at that time, and how time and time again Delilah attempted to discover the secret of his great strength. People read this literally and think it is mere physical strength.  The symbol does not mean he was a muscle man, it means he was powerful spirituality - he was a spiritual lion.

Delilah wanted to make him fall. Every time she asked about the source of his strength he avoided telling her the truth. Yet eventually...

And she said unto him: 'How canst thou say: I love thee, when thy heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.' 16 And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, that his soul was vexed unto death. And he told her all his heart, and said unto her: 'There hath not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazirite [meaning “one who is apart” or “one who abstains” - observing sexual purity: chastity] unto God from my mother's womb; if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.' [Long hair has always been a symbol of sexual purity: chastity].

And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying: 'Come up this once, for he hath told me all his heart.' Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought the money in their hand. And she made him sleep [losing his vigilance] upon her knees [under her hypnotic power]; and she called for a man [Shimshon’s masculine instincts], and had the seven locks of his head shaven off; and she began to afflict him [with lust], and his strength went from him [through the orgasm]. And she said: 'The Philistines are upon thee, Samson.' And he awoke out of his [psychological] sleep, and said: 'I will go out as at other times, and shake myself.' But he knew not that the LORD [the sexual power] was departed from him [because of his fornication]. And the Philistines laid hold on him, and put out his [spiritual] eyes; and they brought him down to Gaza [the ninth sphere], and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison-house...

samson-capturedIn ancient times, long hair was a symbol of chastity, sexual purity. This is why an adulterer or a fornicator was forced to shave their head as a symbol of their shame. Samson was a Nazarene, a particular sect that did not cut their hair as a symbol of sexual purity, chastity. This story represents how in his mind (Lilith, Delilah) caused him to fall from the path - through lust. That is why his hair is cut. He loses all of his spiritual strength and his eyes are put out: his Ayin.

As I explained to you, ע Ayin is the sixteenth letter, which comes after ס Samech (15th), and Samech comes after נ Nun (14th). Nun is the power that is in the waters. The Nun is the fish that moves through מ Mem, the waters. When his hair was cut, that power was cut. When he lost his chastity, when he fornicated, when he became an adulterer, he lost his eyes, spiritually speaking. In other words, instead of taking from Daath goodness or Tob, he took Ra, impurity, and he became blind to God. The strength of God left him and he was put into a prison house, which is hell, Klipoth. In other words, he came to where all of us are: in darkness.

It is sad, but this is what the letter Ayin represents. Two potential outcomes and this is why the letter as two parts.

The longer line of ע Ayin is a letter נ Nun opened and extended. The letter Nun relates with your heart and your sexual organs. The Nun is the seed, the fish, the sperm, and the ovum. The Nun is also in your heart: the Atom Nous, related with Noah, the one who receives guidance from God to be saved from destruction. The son of Nun, Yeshua, is in the heart.

When the Nun is put in motion and forms the power of ס Samech, then a ז Zayin rests on the side of the נ Nun, forming the letter ע Ayin. In other word, the eyes of Nun are opened. The open eyes is represented by the letter ז Zayin, which relates to the capacity of the consciousness to see (Buddhi, Geburah, the Spiritual Soul). You see, there are many mysteries, beautiful Kabbalistic things hidden in this simple shape.

Temptation and Light

In the letter ע Ayin exists the danger of falling. In the letter ס Samech exists the danger of falling. In the נ Nun exists the danger of falling.  Yet, understand that you cannot improve unless you overcome temptation. Without that risk, there would also be no opportunity to rise.  The letter ס Samech, which relates to Lucifer, is how the power is activated and shown to us. Through our Ayin, we see. Then, we have to decide. How do we act? How do we behave? What do we do? If we conquer temptation, the result is light. If we succumb to temptation, the result is suffering.

Lucifer, the bearer of light, says "What will you do with this situation that I have given you in your life?" We look in our mind with our spiritual vision and we imagine: what should i do now? We play the scene in our mind, imagining different outcomes.

If we become identified with our desire, then we act on that desire, the Light that Lucifer brought turns into Esh, fire, we become burned. We suffer. This is hell. Maybe you have not realized it yet, but all of us are already in hell. Hell is psychological: it is your mind. The more you succumb to desire, the more desire grows. The more you repress your desire, the stronger it gets until eventually one day it breaks you. Look around. Look at this planet. See the truth of it. We have made this planet into hell, and we are making it worse day by day.

On the other hand, if you can look in your mind at your desire (whether it is lust, anger, pride, envy, jealousy, laziness, avarice, greed, etc) and not succumb to it, if you can master your mind and see the situation clearly with your spiritual vision, with your intuition, with your conscience, and there by see the truth, that Light becomes fire but rising, elevating you. Then Lucifer becomes your best friend, because when you conquer temptation, you rise.

You see, in the Gospels Jesus faced Lucifer, and needed to, because it is necessary. Lucifer serves God. Lucifer brings the initiate closer to God. Study the book of Job. Lucifer is not evil there, Lucifer is doing the will of God.

Lucifer is the Guardian of the Door of Eden. Lucifer is that flaming sword that guards the way to life, because he is the life. Lucifer and Christ are the same force. When you conquer him, when you overcome the temptations that he provides, he opens the way. You have demonstrated your strength; you have proven to him that you cannot be conquered. This is how you become an Angel, a Buddha, a Master. Not an external Master, but an internal one; the Master is born within.

Unfortunately, most people do not do this. Most people, when they face temptation, look around to see if anybody else is looking, and then they act on their desire, or selfish will. Most of us do that. We think that no one can see in our mind, that we can think whatever we want. We believe “I can think about my resentment, about my envy, I can stew my fears and anxiety...” We do not realize the consequences of those behaviors.

In every moment, light is flowing through our nervous system, flowing through our consciousness. When we remain psychologically asleep, mechanical, unaware of ourselves, just being pushed along through life by that surge of desires through our mind, our Ayin becomes Ayin Ra. Have you ever heard that before? Maybe not in that language, but you have heard it in English: it is called “the evil eye.”

Ayin Ra: The Evil Eye

Most people in the western world think that “the evil eye” is an old wives tale, a joke, some kind of fear, but it is necessary for us to see the truth of it: that all of us have the evil eye because our eye is Ra, impure. Jesus said when we look upon another person with lust we have committed adultery. That is a form of the evil eye; that is an eye that sees through Ra, desire. That ayin does not see the light unmodified, pure.

The grossest form, the worst form of the evil eye, is actually a negative spiritual power. It is an ability held by a person who is so filled with malignant desire, hate, pride, but especially lust, for that force to emerge from them and affect someone else. This is often unconscious, but some do it consciously. This is what is traditionally referred to as “the evil eye.” If someone with this power developed looks at a child with this negative intensity in their mind, the child can get very sick and die. There are cases like this happening all of the time. The doctors don't know what it is; it looks a stomach illness or a general illness. The child dies, and they say it was "Ah, it was the flu" or something else. They do not know about these things. Weak people get sick from this influence all the time.

This is a way that the soma, the soul, enwrapped in pain, projects that pain through the eye and hurts someone else. All of us have that potential. When our heart is filled with anger, pride, self-love, but especially lust... we have terrible power that we scarcely realize. We have no idea how terrible this energy is, and how much suffer we create for others through it.

If we conquer it, if we can control that power, if we harness it with our consciousness, then our eye can become pure. In that case, we say that the Ayin looks towards ס Samech (15), the letter before it. This is עין הטוב Ayin ha Tob: the good eye.

If we are empowering the impure side, if we are remaining submerged in desire and pollution (Ra), then that eye looks towards the next letter, the letter פ Peh (17), and is called עין הרע Ayin ha Ra: the evil eye. That is because the Peh is like a mouth, always wanting to eat, to consume, to feed itself, that is desire; always wanting more and more and never finding satisfaction. Nor is it ever happy, because it does not know God within. It has no contentment; it is desire run amuck. That is our mind; always running from one desire to another, thinking “the next desire will satisfy me. If I get a better a wife, a better boyfriend, a better job, another car, if I move to a new place, if I get better friends, once I learn Gnosis, once I learn to meditate, than I'll be happy.” All this illusion is desire, it is the letter Peh. It is how those forces flow through our mind and keep us trapped in the illusion of life, Maya, the great illusion that looks like light and fire but is empty, formless - unreal.

To really understand the letter ע Ayin within you, you have to meditate. You have to close your physical Ayin, your physical eyes, and open your internal eyes. That is not easy, but by harnessing the forces within you, you can do it. By reflecting upon yourself, you acquire knowledge. That knowledge has Ayin in it: insight, understanding, wisdom, Chokmah, Christ.

When that light begins to emerge inside of your mind, you become a different person, distinct. This is how your whole self becomes filled with light. This is how your Ayin becomes filled with light. In that way you can return to Eden, the state of happiness.

With the mind that we have, as it is right now, it creates suffering and sustains suffering. To have happiness, the mind must change. The only one who can do that is you. You have to save your Self (soma) from yourself.

Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine עין ayin [are] open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. - Jeremiah 32

Questions and Answers

Audience: When we talked about the mind and the reality, the mind is the object and a subject, the mind studies the mind... And it's actually the superior mind that we don't realize. During meditation, is the superior mind studying the mind, the ego?

Instructor:  The character ע Ayin represents the capacity to see. The two parts of the Ayin can relate to your two physical eyes or two potential forms of interior vision or insight. Those are:

  • mechanical imagination, fantasy, daydreaming, which is filtered by ego: fear, anger, lust, pride, etc
  • conscious imagination, which is awakened consciousness without ego; what we would call Samadhi.

The ability to see without filters is beyond the mind. The mind is merely a vessel, a vehicle, a tool. It is not the consciousness. In this, we differentiate the use of the terms from Asian traditions which use the word mind to describe them all in general terms. In this tradition, we talk about the mind in a different way. We talk about mind in relation with the sephiroth: Netzach and Tiphereth, concrete mind and abstract mind; inferior manas and superior manas. Both of those are vehicles or bodies on the tree of life.

To say “the mind studying the mind” is too inclusive. What we need is to get outside of the cage to see the cage. You cannot see the cage of the mind if you are in it. You cannot see yourself if you are trapped in that self.

The state of Samadhi is where the soul escapes from the cage and can see the cage for what it is. That can only be known through experience, by learning how to extract the consciousness from the cage (the mind, samskaras, egos, aggregates, mental forms, etc).

There are many forms of Samadhi. Some forms do not have a complete escape from the cage. If you meditate, you may spend a long time with your eyes closed and seeing darkness and just struggling against thoughts, feelings, memories and all the chaos that surges in the mind. You may struggle for years. It happens. Along the way, you acquire knowledge, you learn about yourself. But at some point, when you do not desire it, when you do not expect it, you will suddenly realize that you are seeing more clearly than you can see with your physical eyes. Usually that experience is such a shock that immediately people are shocked back to the physical body. Then they want to go back to that state of samadhi, but cannot because they are too excited or desiring that state. Then they may spend another few years trying to get back there, because of having a desire to get to that state. Desire cannot enter there, unless you are a black magician; if you walk the path of Ra (impurity), then you use desire to create a state of consciousness that sees, but it is dark light. It is vision in hell. Of course, they do not say that. They claim to teach meditation, clairvoyance, dream quests, etc. There are many who do it. If you want to learn that, there are literally thousands of schools and books who can do that and they will charge for it and you will pay: now and later. In the bible, such a person is called a diviner, a soothsayer. It is very easy to do that, very easy. Many people do it with drugs, psychotropic drugs, and they defend there methods vigorously. There are even so-called Gnostics who do that, though it is not the way to purity and mastery in the light.

If you do work in the right way, you can enter a positive experience of Samadhi through simple, pure, relaxation, when the mind becomes very relaxed. Of course, the body has to be relaxed first, and if the consciousness is attentive, that door of Samadhi will open on its own, because it is the natural state of the mind. In that case, when that happens, you see “the clear light.” In Tibetan, it is called rigpa, the clear light of the mind. It is the natural state of the mind. It is a state of plenitude, beatitude, happiness, bright, clear, beautiful, without desire, perfectly happy. That is your natural state. That is real meditation.

Upon the pure waters of the ocean of the Universal Mind, we can contemplate in a state of ecstasy all the devilries of the pluralized “I.”

When the “I” can no longer hide, it is condemned to death.  The “I” likes to hide, but when it can no longer hide, this wretched one is lost.

It is only in the serenity of the mind that we see the “I” just as it is and not as it apparently is.  To see the “I” and comprehend it becomes an integral whole.  The “I” has failed after we have comprehended it because it inevitably becomes dust.

The stillness of the ocean of the mind is not a result, it is a natural state.  The swollen waves of thoughts are only an accident produced by a monster, which is the “I.”

The fatuous mind, the stubborn mind, the mind that says, “With time I will achieve serenity, one day I will get there,” is condemned to failure because the serenity of the mind does not belong to time.  Everything that belongs to time is of the “I.”  The “I” itself is of time. - Samael Aun Weor

In order to truly comprehend ourselves, we need to enter into that state, then look at that mind that we made, that we are trapped in and that causes so much pain. This is why meditation is so important. We cannot emphasize this enough. It is so important. If you do not meditate you will never learn Gnosis. The experience of Gnosis in yourself is what will teach you, not books, not people, or groups or schools. That is, you only need to learn the doctrine and practice it. This is how every Master became a Master. No Master was given Mastery by a school or book or teacher, or by doing one practice one hundred million times. Mastery means to be a master of oneself, which comes from knowledge of oneself.

Unfortunately, many of us get into habits with our meditation practice. We develop concepts and ideas, and we think our meditation practice has to be done in a certain way and we get stuck in that.

Real meditation only comes when the mind is completely free of prejudice, every kind of political affiliation, religion, school, book, theory, belief, etc. The mind has to be completely free of all artifice. Not even the sense of "I", self, can be there. Not even that.

So when we meditate, this is the state we cultivate: pure awareness, unfiltered, unadulterated, free and peaceful.

We look within to see: what is my consciousness trapped in?

First, we begin with the physical body. We have to become aware of our body, relax the physical body, and then forget about it, leaving it be.

Then, we do the same with emotions. We have a psychological mood, or state, perhaps a little excited, depressed, happy, or irritated. We have to become aware of our emotions, relax the heart, and then leave them behind.

Then, the mind: thoughts, memories, desires, worries, etc... We obsessively think, “What am I going to do tomorrow, next week? What about this or that problem?” All of this needs to be quiet, but it does not become quiet by force. It becomes quiet when you stop feeding it. Separate yourself from habitual thinking and let the thoughts come and go.  Keep your consciousness in place: attentive, relaxed. Right then, the door can open. There is no more magic than that. This is a way of positioning your attentiveness in a state of perfect relaxation. When that state is perfect, the door opens: samadhi, vision. You can call it clairvoyance. You can call it a vision. You will see in a way that is amazing, but perfectly normal and natural.

Through such insight is how you will learn. It is the only way to fully comprehend any ego. You can comprehend the ego when you are in your physical body, just watching yourself, but to fully comprehend the ego requires that you separate yourself from it. You cannot be inside of your ego, inside of your mind. You have to get out of the cage.

When distractions are persistant, whether they are physical, emotion, or mental, you have to first retain minfdulness of what you are doing. If your mindfulness is consistant - that is, you do not forget you are meditating - then in order to go deeper, listen to your intuition, because with any distraction, in each context, there is a way to disperse the power of that distraction. In some cases, it is simply by not paying attention to it anymore. In other cases, you need to turn your attention fully upon it in order to understand it. No matter what, you need sufficient mindfulness and stability to not be identified with the distraction and then lost within it. It is important to remain distant from distractions but to see them for what they are, long enough that you know what it is, and it will naturally disperse. But to know when to look in or away, is intuitive. This is how the conscience is involved.

An important point: your consciousness, the soul, the essence, that which should meditate, is directly connected to God. It is connected through the letter Zayin, this half of the Ayin. Zayin represents how the human soul (the sephirah Tiphereth), represented by the letter Vav, is connected to the sephirah Geburah, the divine soul, which is that ability of insight in the consciousness, which in Sanskrit is called Buddhi. It is the ability of the soul to see. That capacity comes into play when we listen for guidance intuitively. It is hard to put into words, but when you are in meditation, you have to have your will active but also have your will passive. It sounds contradictory. It is hard, really hard to put into words. Stated in a Kabbalistic way, your will is active, but your imagination is passive. These are the first two Arcana. It is how those masculine and feminine forces create a balance, within which the third force can arrive and that third force is the intuitive understanding. So, in those moments of meditation, there is a dynamic that is created by being very relaxed, very receptive, but with a projective will. Again, the words don't get it, but this is something you need to learn to do in meditation.

Instructor: Properly stated, meditation corresponds to the Sanskrit term Dhyana, which is a state of equanimity or stability. It is a state of perfect relaxation in the mind. You can also equate it with Shamatha, calm abiding. That is a proper state of meditation. From that the state of Samadhi can emerge, which is when that vision opens and you begin to see the truth. Previous to arriving to that capacity, whether it is one session or in the career of the mediator, we work where we are. We have a mind and a body that is agitated. So we sit to try to meditate, we try to relax the body, the heart, and the intellect. In all of that should be observation of one self in the same way that we should be observing ourselves continually from moment to moment all day long. If we are really observing ourselves, then we should be seeing the darkness in our mind that is trying to express through actions, heart, and intellect. That begins comprehension. That struggle. Then when we sit to meditate, we close our eyes, we begin to reflect and retrospect on our day, to review our behaviors and actions, to analyze something that is disturbing us. That can lead us to comprehension; there is no Samadhi yet. It is a conscious review, a conscious analysis. That can lead to comprehension. There are a variety of techniques that one can utilize along the way. Master Samael Aun Weor taught many that can help us to not only comprehend our behaviors and what exists in our mind, but to begin to disempower them, to eliminate them. Most of them use imagination, visualization, different types of techniques. But, those are all preliminary. Some people think that simply by repeating the same imagination practice every day, imagining their ego being decapitated or destroyed, that this does it. It does not. It is good to do those practices, but they do not eliminate that ego unless that ego has been fully understood. Here is how you can know, for example: let us look at an ego of frustration with a person. If that person still frustrates us, than that ego is still alive. That frustration can be subtle; we may not even see it. It can come out in sarcasm or being cold or indifferent. It does not have to come out directly. It can come out in different ways. The ego does not succumb to death easily, just because we sit down and do an imagination practice every day.  That does not kill it. Seeing the ego and taking the power from it kills it.

Instructor: The question is how is it that Samson, having fallen, recovered his strength when he grew his hair back, but he did not recover his sight. Well, this unfortunately is a symbol of Karma. It is a symbol of having a debt. When someone has accomplished the work to some degree, they have arrived at some level of spiritual development; they may acquire what we would call “powers,” which are the natural abilities of the soul. Samson had great spiritual strength. Unfortunately, he made a mistake and fell, and those powers were stripped from him. Fortunately, he saw his mistake and tried to repent and correct it by returning to chastity, which is symbolized by his hair growing out, but he has a debt to pay. It is not so simple to just walk right back into Eden. We have to pay for the consequences of our actions. For someone who had acquired a certain level of development, they have a lot of debts. To reach that level they received a lot of help. For example, if you were put into a great position in the physical world as a big shot CEO, and then you betray everybody who helped you get that job, and you get arrested and go to jail, when you get out are you going to get your job back? Are they going to say, “Oh yeah, you are back, you are out of jail now; take your old job back.” I do not think so. You are going to have a lot of debts, and others will not trust you.

In the Gospels, there is a story about this.

And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind (of the mysteries of the Sabbath) from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned [for his debts are now paid], nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.  I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night comes, when no man can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

He recovered his sight because Yeshua, the Savior, spit into the Earth and took the spit with the soil and rubbed it on his eyes and the man regained his sight. This is what we have to do. That story is not literal. It does not mean the Jesus the man spit into the dirt and rubbed spit and dirt in the guy's eye. It means that the sacred energy that emerges from the mouth of Christ, when it is implanted in the Earth (Aretz), which is us, it can restore our vision. But, this is a matter of initiation. It is a matter of paying our debts to the law. Jesus said he did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it to the last point. That law is the law of balance, cause and effect. Samson once he's grown his hair and is blind, represents someone who tries to recover what they lost, but to recover he has to pay through service, through charity. It is interesting the words because in Hebrew the words for service (עבודה) and humility ( ענווה) begin with ע Ayin. There is no mistake there.

Instructor: In many books and lectures, Samael Aun Weor explained that meditation is empowered by transmutation. For the single person, the practice of Pranayama transmutes the sexual force, the creative force, and brings it up into the mind, into the brain, into the nervous system as Ojas, which is spiritual power. This is why all the Yogis, monks, priests, yoginis and great Masters were always chaste. They restrained the sexual force and learned to use it in purity. That is the meaning of chastity. In the sexual force, the Nun, which is in the waters, begins to return upwards through the Tree of Life and the Tree of Knowledge; it enlivens the whole tree. This is why the Psalm says that “he shall be like a tree of life planted by rivers of water.” Jesus aided the Samaritan woman at the well, telling her “if you want the eternal waters of life, bring your husband.” Those waters hold the power of the letter Nun, and when that Nun is transmuted and the letter Samech spins, that light comes up the spine through the Tree of Life in us. That is how the Ayin begins to glow. That is how the light, the Aur, begins to shine in the darkness. This is how God creates. The book of Genesis is an explanation of how that light creates in us.

Therefore, the one who meditates but who is a fornicator, an adulterer, is fooling themselves. This is why there are many mediators who are fornicators and adulterers who have never experienced Samadhi and never will. There is no energy, no fire; there is no life in them. They waste it all in desire and lust.

This is why in ancient times when a person entered into the monastery or priesthood they took a vow of chastity: to learn first how to harness that energy and direct inwards and upwards to awaken their spiritual vision, so they could become a worthy guide, so they would have spiritual insight to see the truth and guide their followers, their congregation. Then later. once that power was established and they understood it, and they had awakened consciousness, they were taught transmutation as a couple, and the monk or the nun would marry. They would work in that for a period of time as a couple until that phase of work is complete. When that phase is complete, the person is done they can leave sex behind if they want. They no longer need it. Saint Paul is an example of that. The current Dalai Lama is another example of that. There are many initiates who have reached that stage and no longer need those practices, those activities.

Nonetheless, transmutation directly impacts meditation. If you really want to experience the state of Samadhi, you must transmute your sexual force. It is the door. This is why Lucifer guards the door to Eden. He is that force. No one can return to it until they harness that fire, which is the flaming sword. That sword is a Zayin, the letter that rests upon Nun to make the Ayin.

Question: You mentioned that the word charity begins with Ayin, and looking at Ayin, it looks like this right side is longer; it's almost like we are looking at a rod and somewhere it's like looking like a fork and it pops up. What would you say about that as far as far as beginning with charity, somewhere along there.

Instructor: You'll have to meditate to discover that. Ayin holds a lot of mysteries; we barely scratched the surface. This is true for all the letters. We are doing sort of the kindergarten. Even though it sounds a lot, this is kindergarten. Because, once you learn what each letter represents, then you start making words, right? Each Hebrew word has those letters. All those meanings are there in the words. This is why we talk about Daath. You need to know about all those letters; Daleth, Ayin, Tav. They all define what Daath is. This is why we gave three lectures about the word Daath and still we barely touched it. It is very deep. I would invite you to follow that in your meditation and see what you can understand.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may עין [ayin, see] your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. - Matthew 5:16
